Spa Policies & Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear? Do I have to be naked?

Utah State Law requires that the massage therapist keep you draped throughout the session and only uncover the area of your body currently being worked. For most massage therapy treatments, the massage therapists will instruct you to undress to your comfort level and can work around whatever you decide. Keeping your undergarments on is okay, as most bodywork can be done over clothing, though flow and continuity will be affected. Fome modalities such as Thai Yoga Massage, Shiatsu, Craniosacral, and Reiki, we ask that you come in comfortable clothing, non-jean material.

What is the minimum age one can get a massage at Healing Mountain?

Anyone under 18 must have a parent or guardian fill out and sign the intake form and the minor release form on behalf of the minor . The parent/guardian must remain on-site throughout the session and for ages under 15 to be in the treatment room. We prefer to have the practitioner to be of the same gender/gender identity; however, we will defer to the parent/guardian’s gender request. We do not offer infant massage. We don’t work on minors under eight without a medical-related referral. We require children under the age of 12 to remain wearing their underwear.

What is customary for tipping? Can I tip students?

Utah State Law prohibits student practitioners from receiving tips*, but tips are a standard protocol for licensed massage therapists. A 20% tip is standard for an enjoyable massage or treatment and is always appreciated and never expected. Some establishments or self-employed therapists may include the tip at an all-inclusive rate.

I have a recent injury. Is it safe to get a massage?

Massage is known to help heal muscle injury. However, the degree of recovery may depend on certain factors such as the type of injury, when it occurred, and the severity of it. In all cases of injury, use common sense and seek a doctor's care whenever necessary. If currently under a physician's care for any injury, please request clearance to receive a massage and notify the front desk when booking.

What’s the difference between a student, an advanced student, or LMT?

All Healing Mountain Massage Therapy students are required to complete 300 hours of clinic practicum. After 160 hours, they become advanced students, which occures around the halfway point in the program. Advanced students further along in their curricullum mentor new students entering the clinic. Many have grasped the full-body Swedish style massage and are working on advanced techniques like Rehabilitative Sports Massage, Craniosacral Therapy, Japanese Shiatsu Massage, and more. LMTs or Licensed Massage Therapists have graduated, taken & passed the national MBLEx exam, and met all the standards for professional licensure through the great state of Utah.

What services do you offer? And how much do they cost?

We offer a variety of services, including 50, 80, and 110-minute Swedish massages, as well as several spa treatments, including a Foot Spa Package, Detoxifying Herbal Body Wrap, and Salt & Honey Scrub. We also offer various bodywork modalities like Reiki, Japanese Shiatsu, Thai Yoga Massage, Hot Stone Swedish, and our Signature Hot Rock with Massage. Visit our website at healingmountain.edu/clinicspa-north or healingmountain.edu/clinicspa-orem for a detailed menu.

What is the cancellation policy?

Healing Mountain Massage School understands that last-minute emergencies happen, and our clients understand that last-minute cancellations are challenging to rebook. Therefore we have a flexible 24-hour cancellation policy. If your cancellation is under 24 hours notice and we can rebook your time slot, you will not be charged; otherwise, if it remains open, you will be charged 100% of the service. If at any time you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment, please be sure to get in touch with our appointment desk promptly.

Should I avoid massage if I am pregnant?

Women can begin massage therapy at any point in their pregnancy – during the first, second, or third trimester. Healing Mountain offers prenatal massage. Our student practitioners and LMTs are trained in contraindications for pregnancy massage, bolstering the body, and the right amount of pressure for expecting mothers. We recommend consulting your primary care physician before booking a massage. They may have specific recommendations for the practitioner, or that waiting until particular metrics are met. Prenatal Massage is not recommended for high-risk pregnancies without the primary care physician's approval. Here is a WebMD link with more info to consider.

What time should I arrive for my appointment? What if I'm late?

Please arrive 5-10 minutes before your appointment. If you arrive late, we will do our best to meet your needs in the time remaining in your reserved appointment time slot. Clients are charged for the entire appointment booked.

What if I have special medical conditions?

Begin by consulting your primary care physician to see if massage is safe for you. Please notify our customer care specialist when booking your appointment for any unique medical conditions to ensure we can meet your specific needs. All student practitioners and LMTs are trained to understand special medical conditions; it is always important to communicate with your practitioner/therapist and continue the communication throughout the massage therapy session.

I can’t get a hold of the front desk; what do I do?

Please leave a voicemail, and we will return your call as soon as someone is available. Often we cannot answer the phone due to assisting other clients during check-in/check-out. The appointment desk will call you back as soon as someone is able.

*Student Tipping Policy

This massage clinic & day spa is an educational department of Healing Mountain Massage School, which is a Bona fide Vocational Training Program as defined by FEDERAL CODE 29, PART 520, SUBPART C. As such, on-site workers offer & participate in vocational training for the sole benefit of student learners as part of their required coursework for graduation. All charges for student services rendered go to operate this facility and employ seasoned professionals to give experiential learning and direction to students as they assist clientele visiting the school clinic.

Students enrolled in the level 1 Experiential Practicum course are under the close direct supervision of working professionals for 160 hours. Students understand they do not receive any pay (including gratuities & gifts) while enrolled in this course. Because students enrolled in the level 2 Intermediate Clinical Applications and level 3 Advanced Clinical Applications courses have passed their initial practicum, they are under less direct supervision and, as part of their training participate in peer mentoring students new to the practicum experience. Peer mentoring is by performance, example, feedback, and offered assistance to classmates in need for a modest hourly sum. All students understand they are not entitled or guaranteed a job upon graduation.

As part of the Student Experiential Practicum course required for graduation, students participate in a clinical practicum, which allows no tipping, gratuities or gifts in return for their practice time. As a result, the front desk will not process gratuities on their behalf. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We remind clinetele to honor student practitioners and the school by not tipping students enrolled in their initial practicum course. (Students, do not accept tips from clientele while enrolled in the Experiential Student Practicum course.)

Because intermediate students, graduate students and licensed massage therapists are classified as paid employees, the front desk will process gratuitites on their behalf. It is the school's policy that clientele are to process gratuities for intermediate students, graduate students and licensed massage therapists directly through the front desk staff, and not directly to the practitioner. (Intermediate, graduate and licensed practitioners, do not accept tips directly from clientele unless processed through the front desk staff.)

-- Thank you for abiding this company policy.
