WHY MASSAGE THERAPY WILL THRIVE POST COVID-19

The world, now more than ever, will be needing therapeutic touch as our economy begins to open back up. (Governor Herbert is opening massage clinics as of today, May 1st. We’ll keep you posted on our reopening dates) If you’re like me, being isolated over the past few months has been stressful. Whether you’ve been helping your kids with their online schooling, disinfecting your groceries, or just tired of being stuck at home, many of us are looking forward to reducing our stress levels. Massage therapy is a well-known holistic approach to reducing stress and anxiety among many other health benefits.

This means the outlook for a career in massage therapy is looking great. Just like back in 2008, massage therapy was barely affected by the Great Recession and many of us in the industry saw an increase in business as clients saw the value massage brings to their lives. Massage therapy just not for pampering, it’s an important part of people’s health regimens. In the past five years leading up to 2020, massage therapy has been one of the fastest-growing fields (22%) across the nation with an even higher rate of growth projected for Utah (42%).

We are now all aware of the importance of thoroughly washing our hands frequently, the massage industry has always been focused on reducing the spread of pathogens. We offer courses in Pathology and Universal Standard Precautions to help our students understand the origins, development, and consequences of diseases as well as taking protective measures for preventing their transmission. Washing our hands for 20+ seconds is not new to our field as well as disinfecting our equipment between sessions. I think one take away from this pandemic is the awareness of how important these types of measures are for all industries to adopt.

HMMS programs are a blend of residential (on-campus) and online (off-campus) courses to provide our students with the best of both worlds. Hands-on courses are essential to learning and practicing specialized techniques and with our small class sizes, that training enhances each individual’s experience. Online courses offer students the flexibility to work on some courses from home at their convenience. During this temporary closure, our school was already equipped with an online infrastructure so our students were able to continue their education from home while we waited out the stay at home orders. Having this online format was invaluable for continuing the same quality of education our students expect.

For those of you who have found yourself on unemployment, will your job be there when businesses begin to open back up? Although spas had to temporarily close to adhere to a 6-foot social distancing, now that it has been lifted, it won’t take long for clients to start booking. Beginning your education in massage therapy now will prepare you to join a growing field next year. For those in the restaurant industry the future is looking uncertain and if you’ve been unhappy being a server or bartender then look at making a change and invest now in your financial future, your health, and your happiness.

We are just around the corner from beginning our Summer Morning Program. If you’ve ever been interested in learning what a career in massage therapy has to offer you, it’s never been easier than right now with our Virtual Tours! Our campuses are also open for in-person tours with 6' physical distancing and wearing of face masks in place.
